What you do during an Abu Dhabi stopover depends mainly on how much time you have between flights, so you can leave the airport and get back in time comfortably. Here are our recommendations based on transit length:
- For an Abu Dhabi layover under 6 hours, we recommend staying inside the airport rather than exiting, since immigration and security checks take up a good part of that window.
- With a 6-7 hour stopover, most travelers visit one or two major landmarks such as the Grand Mosque, Emirates Palace, Qasr Al Watan or Louvre Abu Dhabi. See our half-day private stopover tour.

The short answer is yes! In most cases, you can leave Abu Dhabi Airport during a layover. Many nationalities are eligible for a visa-on-arrival, allowing them to exit the airport and explore the city. Just make sure your layover is long enough (6+ hours recommended) to return in time for your connecting flight.
Do I need a visa if I have a layover/stopover in Abu Dhabi?!
In many cases, you do not need to arrange a visa in advance for an Abu Dhabi layover. Many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival, allowing transit passengers to leave the airport and explore the city.
How to get an Abu Dhabi transit visa ?
To leave Abu Dhabi Airport during a layover, apply for an Etihad-sponsored UAE transit visa before travel, you’ll need at least an 8-hour layover to qualify. Choose the 48-hour visa (from AED 50) for a quick city visit, or the 96-hour visa (from AED 150) if you have more time to explore.
