What to do in Abu Dhabi Transit?

What you do during an Abu Dhabi stopover depends mainly on how much time you have between flights, so you can leave the airport and get back in time comfortably. Here are our recommendations based on transit length:

• • For an Abu Dhabi layover under 6 hours, we recommend staying inside the airport rather than exiting, since immigration and security checks take up a good part of that window.

Local Operator Tip: It typically takes 45 to 60 minutes to clear immigration and exit the terminal to meet your stopover tour guide. We recommend allowing at least 2 hours to return to Zayed International Airport before your connecting flight, so you have enough buffer for security and boarding.

Abu Dhabi Transit Visa

An Abu Dhabi transit visa allows passengers with a stopover at Zayed International Airport (AUH) to leave the airport and explore the city during their layover. 

UAE immigration rules generally place transit passengers into three categories based on their nationality and travel documents:

• Visa on Arrival (Free): Citizens of many countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, most European Union nations, Canada, Australia, and GCC countries, can receive a free entry permit upon arrival.
• Transit Visa (Advance Application): Travelers who are not eligible for visa-free entry may need to apply for a UAE transit visa before travel, usually through their airline, for layovers of 8 hours or more. A 48-hour transit visa is typically free, while a 96-hour transit visa carries a government fee.
• Pre-Arranged Tourist Visa: Some nationalities must obtain a standard UAE tourist visa before departure and cannot rely on transit visa facilities.
